The Iguana
WinnieWinnie isn’t your average iguana ... though she’ll let you think that if it keeps you from asking too many questions. Rescued (or possibly “liberated,” depending on which version of the story Iguana Man tells that day) from a roadside souvenir shop, Winnie has been his constant companion ever since. Perched on his shoulder or sprawled lazily across his lap, she takes in the Florida chaos with the same unbothered calm as her owner, blinking slowly as if she’s seen it all before; and maybe she has.
Winnie has a knack for showing up in the background of neighborhood drama, perfectly posed for any news camera or viral video. She’s been spotted wearing tiny sunglasses, lounging on a beach chair, and once, riding in the basket of a bicycle during a police chase (purely as a passenger, of course). Local kids swear she understands English, and more than one neighbor swears they’ve seen her nod in agreement when Iguana Man mutters about the absurdity of it all.
While she never causes trouble herself, Winnie’s mere presence has become something of a good-luck charm for Raymond and Oscar: if she’s watching, they figure things probably won’t go too wrong. And if she’s not? Well… that’s when they know to worry.
